Swelling herbicide-resistant weed populations have made weeds an even bigger problem.

As notorious yield robbers, weeds have always been one of farmers’ biggest headaches, and swelling herbicide-resistant weed populations have made weeds an even bigger problem. To help producers deal with existing and emerging weeds and the rising resistance threat, new herbicide solutions are released every year. Here’s a look at some new products coming to Western Canada in 2022.

BASF

Voraxor

Registered for use in field peas, lentils, soybeans, field corn, wheat and barley, Voraxor is a pre-seed herbicide containing Tirexor, a new Group 14 active ingredient, along with the proven Kixor active ingredient found in Heat LQ herbicide. According to BASF, Voraxor offers farmers a solution for rapid burndown control of broadleaf weeds, including many Groups 2-, 4- and 9-resistant biotypes, as well as improved broad spectrum burndown of broadleaf weeds. It also provides control of winter annual and perennial weeds and residual suppression of several weeds at higher rates — most notably kochia, cleavers, volunteer canola and wild mustard.

Good news, bad news for fungicides meant to fight stem rot in canola

A report shows overall insensitivity of sclerotinia to three fungicide groups hasn’t changed in a big way between 2010 and 2024 — but shows some sclerotinia populations have been discovered with elevated insensitivity to all three.

Smoulder

Smoulder is a pre-seed herbicide for wheat and barley growers that has saflufenacil and metsulfuron-methyl as its active ingredients. Its two modes of action enable Smoulder to provide both residual control of volunteer canola and effective burndown of all Groups 2-, 4- and 9-resistant broadleaf weeds.

BAYER CROPSCIENCE

Cirray

Cirray is a new cereal herbicide that’s registered for use on spring wheat and barley. Cirray’s Group 1 combination of fenoxaprop and pinoxaden provides effective control of wild oats, green and yellow foxtail, barnyard grass and Persian darnel. This fast-acting herbicide also features a wide application window and excellent crop safety.

Laudis

Laudis is a post-emergence herbicide registered for use on field corn and sweet corn. The commercial availability of Laudis is expanding to Manitoba farmers for the 2022 growing season. The herbicide contains the Group 27 active ingredient tembotrione to help manage herbicide-resistant weeds by adding in another effective mode of action. According to Bayer CropScience, Laudis provides exceptional control of annual broadleaf weeds and grasses (including glyphosate-resistant biotypes) with excellent crop safety.

BELCHIM

Tough 600 EC

Tough 600 EC is a contact herbicide that’s registered for pre-seed and in-crop applications for numerous crops, including canola, dry pea, chickpea, field corn and sweet corn. Its Group 6 mode of action provides effective control of black nightshade and redroot pigweed and suppression of common lamb’s quarters, kochia, common waterhemp and wild mustard. Tough 600 EC works best when tank mixed with other chemistries to obtain additive and/or synergistic control.

UPL AGROSOLUTION

Select 1

Select 1 is a Group 1 herbicide containing clethodim. It is similar to Select herbicide but features a new formulation with a built-in adjuvant, so it’s ready to use right away. Select 1 provides grassy weed control for wild oat, barnyard grass, canarygrass, green and yellow foxtail and more. It’s registered for use on canola, flax and numerous pulse crops, such as different varieties of peas and lentils.

WINFIELD UNITED

Foremost

Foremost is a Group 14 herbicide that controls herbicide-resistant broadleaf weeds in a pre-seed burndown application with flexible cropping options. It’s effective against hard-to-control broadleaf weeds including kochia (Groups 2, 4 and 9 herbicide-resistant weeds), cleavers (Groups 2 and 4 herbicide-resistant weeds), flixweed, lamb’s quarters and redroot pigweed. Foremost is compatible with many tank-mix options including Stonewall 540 and Starbuck herbicides.

Cadillac Unpacked

Containing the Group 1 active ingredient clodinafop, Cadillac Unpacked is a post-emergence herbicide that provides effective control of grassy weeds such as wild oats, volunteer oats, green and yellow foxtail, barnyard grass, volunteer canary seed and Persian darnel. Cadillac Unpacked is registered for use on spring wheat and durum and is compatible with a wide range of broadleaf tank-mix options for broad spectrum weed control.
