There are lots of new choices for cereal growers in Western Canada this winter. Twenty-one wheat, barley and oat varieties are coming to market for next year, with many of them featuring improved resistance to fusarium and rust diseases. Please note, the following list includes only brand new releases for 2022.
Alliance Seed
Oats: CDC Endure is a high-yielding oat variety with strong standability that’s now available across Western Canada after a limited launch for 2021. Developed by the University of Saskatchewan Crop Development Centre, CDC Endure is a top-yielding line that has been shown to outyield AC Morgan with better standability, high test weight and plumpness. It matures three days earlier than CS Camden and offers consistently high beta-glucan levels attractive to end-users.

A report shows overall insensitivity of sclerotinia to three fungicide groups hasn’t changed in a big way between 2010 and 2024 — but shows some sclerotinia populations have been discovered with elevated insensitivity to all three.
Canterra Seeds
Durum: AAC Donlow is an early maturity CWAD variety that offers the best FHB resistance in its class and a very strong rust resistance package. It features excellent standability and yield potential and is suitable for both dryland and irrigation durum-growing areas.
FP Genetics
CWRS: AAC Russell VB is a semi-dwarf variety that delivers high yield in combination with high protein. It offers strong lodging resistance and a robust disease package that includes an intermediate rating for FHB resistance.
CPSR: CDC Reign is a new semi-dwarf variety that has shown high grain yields without sacrificing protein. It is rated intermediate for FHB resistance and its short, strong straw provides excellent milling opportunities.
Proven Seed
CWRS: AAC Russell VB is an early maturing variety that is high yielding (105 per cent of Carberry yield) and offers protection against wheat midge. It is resistant to leaf rust and moderately resistant to stem rust, stripe rust and FHB.
CWRS: CDC Pilar CL Plus is a mid-maturity wheat with Clearfield Plus technology. The variety offers strong yield and good protein with very short straw, which provides very good lodging resistance. It is resistant to leaf rust, moderately resistant to stem rust, and is rated intermediate for FHB resistance.
CWRS: CDC Succession CL Plus VB is a mid-maturity wheat featuring Clearfield Plus technology and resistance to wheat midge. This high-yielding variety (102 per cent of Carberry yield) is moderately resistant to leaf rust and stem rust and is moderately susceptible to FHB.
CWRS: SY Brawn VB is a midge-tolerant varietal blend with excellent protein and high yield potential (106 per cent of Carberry yield). This mid-maturing variety is moderately resistant to stripe rust and is rated intermediate for FHB resistance.
CPSR: SY Rorke offers one of the highest yields in the CPSR category (111 per cent of Carberry yield). This late-maturing variety also features great protein and good test weight. It is resistant to leaf rust and stem rust, susceptible to stripe rust and is rated intermediate for FHB resistance.
Durum: CDC Flare CL Plus is the first and only durum wheat with Clearfield Plus technology. It features excellent standability and a high yield potential (107 per cent of Strongfield yield). This mid-maturity variety is resistant to leaf rust and moderately resistant to stripe rust.
SeCan
CWRS: CDC SKRush is a high-yielding, early maturing wheat featuring good lodging resistance. This awned variety yields 12 per cent higher and grows eight centimetres taller than AC Carberry. It is moderately resistant to FHB, stripe rust and stem rust and is resistant to leaf rust.
CWRS: AAC Redstar is an early maturing awned variety that has fair lodging resistance and good sprouting resistance. Compared to AC Carberry, it yields four per cent more, is seven centimetres taller and matures three days earlier. It is moderately resistant to FHB, stripe rust and leaf rust and is resistant to stem rust.
Durum: CDC Defy is a high-yielding variety that is moderately susceptible to FHB, which is the best rating available in a durum variety. It is resistant to leaf rust and has moderate resistance to stem rust and intermediate resistance to stripe rust. Its yield is 110 per cent of AC Strongfield and it has maturity equal to AC Strongfield.
Wheat: WPB Whistler is a high-yielding, special purpose wheat with late maturity. WPB Whistler matures six days later than AC Carberry and its yield is 30 per cent higher than AC Carberry. This is an awnletted (short awns) variety and it is well suited for feed or ethanol production. It is rated as resistant to stripe rust, stem rust and leaf rust and it is moderately susceptible to FHB.
Barley: AB Tofield is a six-row, feed/forage barley with smooth awns and strong straw. It yields seven per cent more than CDC Austenson and matures two days later than the AC Metcalfe variety. It is rated as susceptible to FHB and resistant to stem rust.
Barley: Esma is a two-row feed barley developed in Europe that has very strong straw, which makes it suitable for high moisture and high input environments. Compared to AC Metcalfe, it yields 17 per cent higher and matures four days later. It is rated as susceptible to both FHB and stem rust.
Barley: KWS Kellie is a two-row feed barley which yields 116 per cent of AC Metcalfe and matures four days later than that variety. Developed in Europe, this strong-strawed variety is well adapted to high moisture and high input environments. It is rated as susceptible to both FHB and stem rust.
Barley: CDC Churchill is a two-row malting barley variety that yields 17 per cent more than AC Metcalfe and matures one day later. It is widely adapted across the Canadian Prairies and its low protein and reduced enzyme levels make it a great fit for the craft malting and brewing markets. CDC Churchill is rated as moderately susceptible to FHB and moderately resistant to stem rust. CDC Churchill is undergoing evaluation for the malting and brewing markets.
Oat: AAC Douglas is a white-hulled, milling oat variety with good lodging resistance that yields 101 per cent of AC Morgan and matures one day later. It is rated as moderately resistant to crown rust along with intermediate resistance to stem rust, which makes it well suited to production on the eastern Prairies. AAC Douglas is undergoing evaluation for the milling market.
Seednet
