– Hurricane Beryl is expected to pass through Jamaica on Wednesday before heading towards the Cayman Islands on Thursday and Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula on Friday, according to the United States National Hurricane Center. A hurricane watch was also in effect for Haiti’s southern coast, while Belize issued a tropical storm watch. So far, six people have been killed by the storm, four in the Caribbean and two in Venezuela. However, the hurricane weakened from Category 5 to Category 4 on Tuesday.

– Lt.-Gen. Jennie Carignan will be named the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) new chief of the defence staff later this month, the federal government announced today. Carignan, who is the military’s chief of professional conduct and culture, will be the first woman appointed to the top job. During her 38 years with the CAF, she was the first woman to lead a combat force in the Canadian military, was deployed to Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq, and received both the Meritorious Service Medal and the Governor General’s Order of Military Merit.
– Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is considering putting tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles and blocking Chinese investment in Canadian factories, according to a document released on Tuesday. However, batteries or battery components were not listed as considered for tariffs. The federal government will gather feedback from automotive industry groups and labour unions until Aug. 1 before imposing tariffs.
– An environmental report from Google revealed the company’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions jumped by nearly half over the past five years, blaming its integration of artificial intelligence into its products. In 2023, Google produced 14.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent into the atmosphere, 48 per cent higher than in 2019. Artificial intelligence is very resource-intensive and more data centres are needed to maintain it. The company had previously planned to eliminate GHG emissions by 2030.
