CNS Canada — Seeding of spring wheat in North Dakota and Montana continued to be very slow during the week ended May 4, due to ongoing cool, wet conditions, a report from the North Dakota Wheat Commission said.
As of Sunday, only about five per cent of the spring wheat crop was seeded in North Dakota, up from three per cent the week prior, USDA data showed. At the same time last year, six per cent of the crop was seeded, while the five-year average is 28 per cent.

In Minnesota, four per cent of the spring wheat crop was planted, up from two per cent last week, and a year ago. The five-year average for this time of year is 45 per cent planted.
Planting progress is much further along in South Dakota and Montana, with both states only slightly behind the five-year averages of 64 per cent and 41 per cent, respectively.
The spring wheat crop in Montana was 37 per cent seeded as of Sunday, up from 19 per cent last week and 30 per cent a year ago. South Dakota’s crop was 59 per cent seeded, up from 42 per cent last week and 41 per cent last year.
There was no emergence of crops in North Dakota or Minnesota, but some plants were starting to emerge in South Dakota and Montana.
In South Dakota, 11 per cent of the crop seeded had emerged as of Sunday, up from four per cent last year but below the 34 per cent average. Montana emergence was at one per cent, the same as a year ago and below the average of eight per cent. — Commodity News Service Canada
