Grainews’own columnist, Andrew DeRuyck and his wife Tanis have been named Manitoba’s Outstanding Young Farmers and will vie for the national title this November at Brandon, Man.
Andrew and Tanis DeRuyck run both a grain-farming operation and farm management consulting business near Mariapolis, Man.
Andrew and Tanis began farming 12 years ago in joint partnership of a grain/beef farm with Andrew’s parents, including a 275 cow-calf herd and 275-head feedlot. When the cattle herd was dispersed in 2007, the couple incorporated their portion of the family farm, purchased another section of land to focus on grain farming and also formed DeRuyck Consulting Incorporated — a farm management business. The farm business management business has given Andrew and Tanis the opportunity to work with numerous producers and advisory services providing financial and strategic planning advice. In 2009, they formed Right Choice Management Consulting — a joint venture with financial adviser and fellowGrainewscolumnist Mark Sloane — that has enabled them to further grow this side of their farm business.
On the production side of their operation, the DeRuycks’ grain operation covers 1,120 acres (about 900 are cultivated) and also includes custom work. Andrew and Tanis farm with their two children, Ben (nine) and Paige (six).
Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2011 will be chosen at the National Event in Brandon, MB from November 14-20, 2011.
