10-4 Phone Or Mike Phone

While visiting with Broadview, Sask., farmer David Sefton at the SaskFlax meeting in Saskatoon in January, I noticed David’s “10-4” phone. They’re like walkie-talkies but have the reach of a wireless phone. You can call anyone on your five-name contact list anywhere within wireless range. You can also use 10-4 phones as regular cellphones to call other people.

SaskTel and Bell call them 10-4 phones. Telus calls them Mike phones.

The Bell website says that when using the 10-4 feature, you get cross-Canada coverage on Bell’s core network and within Sprint coverage areas in the United States, with no long distance charges.

With Bell, for $15 per month, you get unlimited 10-4 calling between the five on your list. That’s what Sefton pays with SaskTel. If you use cellphones on the combine to relay quick messages back and forth between home and the truck, 10-4 phones might be good option.
