Global Markets: Solid North American Jobs Data

WINNIPEG, July 7 (CNS Canada) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– US nonfarm payrolls increased by 222,000 jobs in June, according to a report from the US Labor Department. The employment growth beat expectations and was seen as a sign that the US Federal Reserve could be increasing interest rates again sometime soon.

– Canadian jobs data also beat expectations, with 45,000 new jobs created in June and the unemployment rate declining to 6.5 per cent, according to Statistics Canada data. However, most of the gains were in part time positions.

– G20 leaders are meeting in Germany this weekend, and investors will be watching for any news out of the meetings and surrounding protests.
