Global Markets: Markets brace for Hurricane Irma

WINNIPEG, Sept. 8 (CNS Canada) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Credit check company Equifax was hit by a major security breach, with hackers gaining access to the information, including birth dates and social security numbers, of roughly 143 million US customers. Canadian and UK customers were also part of the breach.

– Hurricane Irma is set to make landfall on Florida over the weekend, and the massive storm put a cautious tone in the commodity and financial markets.

– Canada’s unemployment rate declined 0.1 points, to 6.2 per cent in August, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada. That marks the lowest unemployment rate since October 2008. About 22,000 new jobs were created during the month, with an increase of 110,000 part-time jobs countered by a loss of 88,000 full-time jobs.
