New corn varieties for 2020

Planning to plant corn? There are a lot of new options for the 2020 growing season

Corn growers are spoiled for choice this winter, with 27 new hybrids and one new conventional variety (from Thunder Seed) coming to market for 2020. Lots of new varieties on offer include the YieldGuard Corn Borer trait developed by Monsanto, or offer some level of resistance to Goss’s wilt.

Here is the list.

Corteva: Pioneer

Corteva, the re-branded ag company that was spun out of the merger of Dow Chemical and DuPont, offers two major seed brands: Pioneer and Brevant.

Ellis Clayton, technical product manager, says that although there are two brands, “we’re one breeding program.” All of the corporate research is done one major program, he says, and “everything funnels out of that.”

The Pioneer seed brand began in Iowa in 1926 as the “Hi-Bred Corn Company.” “Pioneer” was added to the corporate name in 1935. DuPont purchased the company in 1999.

The Brevant brand is much newer. This new name was announced in February 2018. Dow’s Nexera canola is now sold under the Brevant name.

Corteva runs breeding programs for canola, soybeans and corn.

Thunder Seed

Wendy Major, Canadian sales manager for Thunder Seeds has noticed that a lot of farmers are growing dual-purpose corn varieties — varieties that can be grown for grain or silage.

If time is going to be an issue, for example, if you have a custom chopper coming in with a limited schedule, Major suggests you might want to consider a strictly silage variety. “A strictly silage variety will dry down slower than a dual-purpose variety,” Major says. “This is going to give you that bigger window for chopping.”

“Everybody’s a little different,” Major says. Some farmers have their own equipment, others rely on custom choppers. “The person selling you corn should be asking you lots of questions.”
