A high-yielding barley, a new midge resistant wheat and the first herbicide tolerant wheat with good disease resistance, are among the 11 new cereal varieties available to Western Canadian farmers for 2010.
Here is what’s new for 2010, listed in alphabetical order:
CDC Mindon Two-row feed SeCan
Key features: CDC Mindon is a strong strawed, two-row feed barley that is widely adapted across Western Canada and is rated as having “good” resistance to fusarium head blight. It also has resistance to DON (deoxynivalenol) accumulation and improved spot blotch resistance. CDC Mindon has large, plump kernels with very high test weight along with resistance to smut and stem rust.
2-row malting barley Canterra Seeds
Key Features: CDC PolarStar is an IP variety with Prairie Malt. It is agronomically similar to CDC Kendall but possesses a unique trait that prevents cloudiness in beer and extends its shelf life.
6-row malting barley Canterra Seeds
Key Features: Stellar-ND is well suited to the barley growing areas of the central and eastern Prairies. It possesses excellent malting quality and is early maturing. It has growing demand from the brewing industry.
Two-row grain silage Mastin Seeds
Key features: Sundre barley is a top yielding, six row, smooth-awned conventional barley with class leading grain and forage yields. It has the highest grain yield of any barley ever developed at Alberta Agriculture in Lacombe, outyielding the previous champion, Vivar. It also has high forage yields, outperforming AC Lacombe and Vivar by 12 per cent. Sundre has good resistance to some diseases but susceptibility to others, which are controlled with seed treatments. Susceptible to lodging under very high fertility.
Hard red winter SeCan
Key features: Accipiter is a general-purpose hard red winter wheat that should be suitable for the feed, ethanol and milling markets. It is an intermediate height semi-dwarf with strong straw, good stem rust resistance and intermediate leaf rust resistance. It has grain protein levels comparable to CDC Raptor and CDC Osprey
AC Unity CWRS SeCan
Key features: AC Unity is one of the first midge-tolerant wheat varieties available in Western Canada. It offers top yield, medium maturity and good disease resistance along with improved pre-harvest sprouting resistance. It will be sold as a varietal blend containing 90 per cent AC Unity and 10 per cent AC Waskada. AC Waskada will act as a refuge for the wheat midge, which will prolong the life of the midge tolerance gene.
Soft white spring SeCan
Key features: AC Sadash is a soft white spring wheat variety with grain yield similar to AC Andrew and grain protein 0.5 percentage points lower than AC Andrew. It offers excellent milling characteristics and will also be desirable in the ethanol market due to low protein. It is moderately susceptible to leaf rust but is resistant to stem rust, stripe rust, loose smut and powdery mildew. Like other SWS varieties, AC Sadash is susceptible to bunt and black point.
AC Waskada CWRS SeCan
Key features: AC Waskada is one of the few wheat varieties available in Western Canada that is rated as having “good” fusarium head blight resistance. It offers top yield, medium maturity and very good disease resistance along with excellent pre-harvest sprouting resistance.
Key Features: Glenn has good yield potential and high test weight. It is rated R to stem rust and leaf rust and shows improved resistance to fusarium head blight (FHB) and reduced DON (deoxynivalenol) levels. It is very well suited to areas where and rust and FHB are of concern.
Hard red winter SeCan
Key features: Peregrine is a general purpose hard red winter wheat that should be suitable for the feed, ethanol and milling markets. It is comparable in straw strength but six cm taller than CDC Osprey. Peregrine has good leaf, stem and stripe rust resistance, but is susceptible to bunt. Protein levels are comparable to CDC Osprey.
CWRS Clearfield Syngenta Seeds
Key features: The first CWRS wheat that combines Clearfield with good disease resistance. Performs much like Superb in terms of agronomics and yield, with improved resistance to rust and high level of resistance to fusarium head blight.
SW Triactor White oat
Key Features: Yields 113 per cent of Dancer and Cascade and has very good standability.
