Tried-And-True Household Hints

For fluffy rice:

Add 1 tablespoon lemon juice and

1 teaspoon butter (OR maragine) and 2 teaspoons salt when cooking

2 cups rice with 4 cups water.

To keep whipping cream stiff: Add 1 tablespoon skim milk powder when beating the cream.

For lighter no-fail bread:

Add 1 tablespoon lemon juice OR 1 tablespoon vinegar to dough when mixing.

For fork-tender beef:

Wrap well-seasoned roast in foil. Roast and don’t open foil until ready to eat. The juices inside the package can then be used to make a delicious gravy.

Chewier chocolate chip cookies:

Add 2 tablespoons corn syrup to your cookie recipe.

Time saver:

Package grated carrots in recipe-size

portions and freeze. When baking, just thaw and add to ingredients.

Cleaning counters and cutting boards:

Use full-strength vinegar. Allow to sit a few minutes then wipe down with soap and hot water for a disinfecting treatment.

Replacing salt:

Add 1 teaspoon sugar to corn

or carrots when boiling, for better flavour and less sodium.

Washing fruits and vegetables:

Use a solution of 1 tablespoon vinegar and 1 litre of warm water to wash fruits and veggies. Rinse with cool water.

Fruit fly trap: Punch holes in an empty margarine container lid with a knitting needle. Place a well-ripened piece of banana in the tub. Replace the lid and watch how the flies fly in, but can’t get out. Empty, wash and reuse if necessary. It works beautifully.
