Regina ag venue’s new arena complex named

The host site for events such as Canadian Western Agribition and the Western Canada Farm Progress Show has a naming sponsor for the multi-purpose arena complex now being built there.

Evraz Place, formerly known as Ipsco Place and previously as Regina Exhibition Park, has sold naming rights for the new facility to Regina-based Co-operators Life Insurance Co. as the park’s newest corporate partner.

The new venue, to be called “The Co-operators Centre” and scheduled for completion in December this year, is to have six regulation-size ice surfaces, with the main arena providing seating for about 1,500 spectators.

The facility is to feature full food and beverage services and have the flexibility to host various ice sports and dry-floor events, Evraz Place management said in a release Thursday.

“This facility will play a vital role in securing the long-term future of events like Canadian Western Agribition and the Royal Red Arabian Horse Show in Regina,” the release noted.

Starting in January 2010, the Co-operators Centre is also to be the new home for the University of Regina’s men’s and women’s Cougars hockey teams.

Evraz Place, operated by the Regina Exhibition Association, said it considers the Co-operators Centre to be a “key component” in bidding for regional, national and international sporting events.

The association said the new facility’s “connectivity” to the Queensbury Convention Centre, Credit Union EventPlex and Brandt Centre (formerly the Agridome) provides Regina with a “unique competitive advantage” in securing events such as the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships.

Evraz Place’s agreement with the Co-operators Life Insurance Co., the second-largest member of the Guelph-based Co-operators insurance and investment group, is for a 10-year term at a total value of $1.3 million, with an option to renew for a second 10-year term.
