Georges Mamelonet, the Liberal MNA for Gaspe, has been named parliamentary assistant to Laurent Lessard, Quebec’s minister of agriculture, fisheries and food.
Premier Jean Charest named Mamelonet to the post in a release Thursday, along with parliamentary assistants for 17 other cabinet ministers, and filled other posts within the Liberal government caucus.
Mamelonet is new to the Quebec assembly, having won the Gaspe riding in the December 2008 election from the Parti Quebecois, which had held it since 1994 and defeated Mamelonet there in his first run as its Liberal candidate in 2007.
Mamelonet was born in Casablanca, Morocco, studied diesel mechanics in France and moved to the Gaspe region of Quebec in 1978.
A businessman and restaurateur, Mamelonet in 2003 was elected mayor of Perce, a community about 75 km south of Gaspe. He is also an active member of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary.
