A Montreal-area poultry cutting and processing plant has been allowed to restart work after losing its federal operating license for over two weeks due to concerns over its food safety regime.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Tuesday it has allowed Distributeurs des Volailles, Beurre et Oeufs Akme, based at Saint-Eustache, west of Montreal, to resume operating under “intensified CFIA inspection.”
CFIA had suspended the Akme plant’s operating license on May 6 and allowed work to resume effective Friday (May 24).
Akme, in business since 1967, is licensed for boning, cutting and “other processing” of poultry and red meat, and for exports to the U.S., South Africa and Chile.
The company is also licensed as an inspection station for imported and/or “detained” meat products coming in from the U.S., and for such meat products (other than beef) from South America.
Controls for food safety were “not being reliably implemented in the facility on a consistent basis,” CFIA said when announcing the suspension earlier this month.
Akme, the agency said, had also “failed to correct deficiencies previously identified through CFIA inspections including corrective action requests related to general hygiene requirements.”
The agency didn’t publicly lay out its specific concerns but said earlier this month the suspension would stand until Akme “fully implemented the necessary corrective actions.” — AGCanada.com Network
