Cargill’s animal nutrition wing has signed a deal it expects will expand the Prairie market for its SafeChoice horse feed and other Nutrena animal feed products.
The deal, announced Thursday by Cargill, will see SafeChoice and other brands on the shelves at Peavey Mart stores across Western Canada.
Red Deer, Alta.-based Peavey Industries’ retail chain includes 29 stores in the four western provinces, mostly in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Cargill Animal Nutrition has seen “great demand” for Nutrena’s SafeChoice brand since it was rolled out in the U.S. in 2005, according to Nutrena brand manager Deb Correll in Cargill’s release Thursday.
The product until now has only had “limited” availability in Western Canada, a Cargill spokesman said.
The pelleted feed product’s “controlled-starch” design is meant to help reduce the risk of metabolic imbalances related to high starch intake, Correll said. SafeChoice is also high in digestible fibre, fats and protein for “healthy digestion and reliable performance.”
The formula also includes processed grains, yeast cultures and “direct-fed” microbials, plus organic complex trace minerals, the company said.
