Manitoba’s provincial government and CropLife Canada on Tuesday kicked off a three-day campaign to collect farmers’ obsolete agricultural pesticides.
From Tuesday to Thursday (Oct. 21-23), Manitoba farmers can dispose of obsolete pesticides free of charge at any one of 20 retailers hosting collection sites listed at the end of this article.
CropLife Canada, the national group representing the ag chemical and biotech industries, noted in a Manitoba government release Wednesday that its collection programs have gathered up over 1.2 million kg of unwanted pesticides across Canada since they began in 1998.
Agriculture Minister Rosann Wowchuk said in the release that such programs “clearly show how to take an environmental concern and find a practical and effective solution.”
Pesticide products that will be accepted under the campaign include agricultural herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and rodenticides, the province and CropLife said.
Products that won’t be accepted, however, include empty pesticide containers, spray tank rinsate, adjuvants, treated seed, home and garden pesticides, paints, thinners, waste oils or “any other household hazardous waste,” they said.
