Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt is booked to introduce back-to-work legislation Monday morning (June 20) in Ottawa to halt the latest labour disruptions at Canada Post.
Raitt’s bill, which the government on Wednesday dubbed the Restoring Mail Delivery for Canadians Act, would end a work stoppage that began June 3 with rotating strikes by members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), evolving into a lockout by Canada Post starting June 14.
“This legislation is necessary as the government of Canada simply cannot wait for the parties to reach a settlement when there is no reasonable prospect for an agreement in the near future,” the government said in a release Wednesday.
Canada Post, in a separate release Friday, said it and the union “remain divided on a number of key bargaining issues.”
Raitt’s release didn’t say exactly when her back-to-work legislation would come into effect once passed by the Commons and Senate.
