North America was the weakest of Agco’s sales markets in the latest fiscal year for the farm equipment manufacturer, Scott Garvey reports.

In its fourth quarter earnings call in early February, Agco executives made it clear North America was home to the company’s weakest global sales market, making it a money-losing region for the company.

“North American sales decreased by $33 million year over year, and operating margins remain below breakeven,” said Damon Audia, Agco’s senior vice-president and chief financial officer.

Agco experienced a nine per cent drop in sales in North America over 2025, one per cent less than the 10 per cent overall market decline. The company attributes that drop to farm income declines in the United States and tariff costs, which it expects will continue into 2026.

The company’s softer sales came largely from lower demand for sprayers and mid-range tractors.

“Farmers are delaying new equipment purchases due to elevated input costs and tighter profit margins,” said Audia.

“The U.S. government’s $12 billion farmer bridge assistance program has helped shore up farmers’ balance sheets but has not translated into new equipment purchases at this time.”

Less decline

While Agco’s financial statements pool all of North America into one market segment, sales reports from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers shows Canada had significantly less decline in tractor and combine sales than the U.S.

This means much of the North American market decline appears to be attributable primarily to reduced U.S. sales.

Other, stronger global market regions, however, helped push the company’s overall operating profit to an average 7.7 per cent for 2025.

“Our adjusted operating margins are among the best in Agco’s history and the strongest for this point in the (farm machinery sales) cycle,” said chief executive officer Eric Hansotia.

Agco sees the smaller-tractor market as likely to run counter to the current downslope in tractor sales. Photo: Agco

“We nearly doubled our adjusted operating margins from prior (demand) troughs.”

Because low North American demand, particularly in the U.S., is expected to continue through 2026, the company is planning to continue its reduced manufacturing output, hoping to lower machinery inventory here to a six-month supply.

“You’re going to see North America down in a loss margin in the high single, low double-digits for 2026,” said Audia.

“Europe should stay right around that 15 per cent (profit) margin for the full year.”

A big factor in that loss is tariff costs imposed by the U.S. government.

“The absolute tariff costs for 2026 will be around $105, $110 million,” he added. “That’s what’s compressing our year-over-year margins.”

Gains of other sorts

Despite that negative financial news from this side of the Atlantic, the company actually saw a gain in market share in North America, and executives expect another two to three per cent marketshare gain in 2026 as the company’s newest machines debut.

“Agco turned in the highest market share in our history in 2025” globally, Hansotia said.

“It was the largest one-year gain for market share in North America.”

One North American segment that is likely to run counter to the declining sales trend is smaller tractors.

“The North American small tractor market offers a more positive counter balance as livestock and hay economics look comparatively resilient,” Audia said.

“And the older (farmer-owned) fleet points to emerging opportunities in 2026. We expect smaller tractors to be up modestly.”

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-180310 size-full" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/31185127/287981_web1_erichansotia-303x303.jpeg" alt="Eric Hansotia, Agco’s CEO. Photo: Agco

Overall, though, the company expects large ag equipment sales numbers in North America to fall further, by as much as 15 per cent.

On the other side of the Pacific, Australia has seen gains for the company.

Europe, however, is likely to remain the brightest spot for Agco, with a possible five per cent sales increase expected due to solid farm incomes there causing positive sentiment among producers.

“Farmer sentiment (in Europe) is relatively positive,” said Hansotia.

“At Agritechnica, the feedback we were getting was more positive than we expected.”

While the company doesn’t expect the global machinery market to significantly improve this year, it should boost profit margins due to production cost reductions and overall total global sales stability outside of the U.S.

“We expect global industry demand to be relatively flat compared to 2025,” said Hansotia.

Washington | Reuters — U.S. President Donald Trump announced new measures on Friday to support U.S. farmers who are reeling from the administration’s trade policies and the Iran war and suggested farm equipment makers cut prices – a call that sent their shares lower.

“I want John Deere and Case and all of – they’re great companies, Caterpillar… I want these companies to give it to you in the form of lower tractor and equipment costs,” Trump told hundreds of farmers and ranchers gathered under drizzle at an event on the South Lawn of the White House.

Deere & Co shares dropped two per cent after the statement. Case IH manufacturer CNH Industrial fell one per cent while Caterpillar Inc was down nearly 1.2 per cent in late-session trading.

The three companies could not immediately be reached for comment.

Trump seeks support from struggling farmers

Trump called for lower prices in an aside during a speech that otherwise focused on shoring up support among the Republican president’s loyal constituency of rural voters, who have backed Trump in all three of the last presidential races.

For the fourth straight year, U.S. crop producers are facing tight margins, high production costs and low commodity prices – and are struggling financially – despite near-record government payments.

The Trump administration is distributing $12 billion (C$16.7 billion) in aid to U.S. farmers — a move that farm trade groups and agricultural economists have said is helpful in the short-term but will not fully compensate farmers for financial losses that have topped $30 billion in recent years.

On Friday, Trump said he would seek even more such aid for farmers from Congress. More than 50 farm-interest groups, such as the American Farm Bureau Federation, are urging Congress to approve additional aid in a military funding package.

Trump pledges new loan guarantees

The event happened as the administration finalized new biofuel blending mandates for U.S. oil refiners, requiring them to mix more of the fuels made from corn and other agricultural products into the nation’s gasoline and diesel than initially proposed, in an apparent win for farmers.

Trump also said the U.S. Small Business Administration would open up new loan guarantees for farmers and food suppliers.

Farmers are entering the critical spring planting season under a cloud of uncertainty as the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran disrupts global trade, causing fertilizer and diesel costs to spike.

The long-term U.S. trade relationship with China also remains unclear amid the ongoing trade war launched by Trump’s administration with the country, the world’s top soy importer.

Rural voters constitute a fifth of the U.S. electorate, and they favored Trump by a two-to-one margin over Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

Case IH has been offering its Optum line of mid-horsepower tractors for about a decade. This year, the new models added to that family bring more ponies to the stable, with the new flagship model now hitting 435 horsepower

“The current Optums are a 270, 300 and 340 with a 6.7-litre engine,” says J.E. Cadle, North American marketing manager for Optum tractors.

“This is 360, 390 and our top model we call a 440, but it’s 435 maximum horsepower, and it’s the 8.7-litre. And it’s constant power. When we say 435, we’re delivering that 435 all the time.”

READ MORE: Scott’s high-horsepower tractor guide for 2026

To back up the bigger engine and deliver power, the three new models get a sturdier version of the continuously variable transmission (CVT) the brand has been offering in the current Optums.

“This is a CVT with our CVXDrive transmission. It’s a 4 X 2,” he says.

“It’s very similar to the one that’s in the Optum today, but it’s bigger, beefed up to handle the extra horsepower. That 4 X 2 design gives us more mechanical efficiencies. It’s a proven design, very quiet.”

The CVXDrive version in these Optums can hit 37 m.p.h. (60 km-h) on the road.

However, in order to cram that bigger engine and transmission into an Optum, Case IH’s engineers had to start from scratch and re-engineer the tractor.

“Even though the Optum name is not new for Case IH, this tractor really is new from the ground up,” says Cadle.

WATCH: Greg Berg shows us the new Optums at Agritechnica

With the new big three Optums able to deliver more power in the field and handle bigger implements, the hydraulic system needed to be ramped up as well.

A standard flow rate of 58 g.p.m. (219 l/m) comes from a single-pump system, but there is an option to go for a dual, twin-flow system now. Two pumps will boost flow up to a total of 95 g.p.m. (360 l/m). That allows the tractors to run bigger implements or run at a lower engine r.p.m. and still get high flow rates.

There is also a larger reservoir to allow for a higher volume of oil to flow, which accommodates the demands of larger or more hydraulic cylinders on an implement.

To help improve traction and smooth out the ride, the suspended front axle gets a redesign.

“Suspended front axle was standard on the current Optum … but an independent front link, a double wishbone suspension is what’s new,” says Cadle.

“So this is a totally different CNH-designed, independent front-link suspension. We get a really nice ride out of this tractor. It will keep power to the ground if you’re on a slope or uneven terrain. Its handling on the road is awesome with this new suspension.”

Added to that is an improved hydraulic braking system and the addition of an engine brake, making these tractors ideal for road haulage. There is also an option for built-in auto tire inflation system.

“The braking system on this tractor is outstanding,” says Cadle.

“It’s got an engine brake. You barely touch these brakes and the tractor stops on a dime if you need it to.”

Inside, the cab won’t see any significant changes. It will carry over the design, which was introduced a couple of model years back. The new Puma range of tractors uses the same cab.

The Optums get a facelift too, with a redesigned hood and overall appearance change that is in line with the look of the current Steigers, sprayers and the newest Pumas.

One unique feature of the redesign is the IH emblem built into the rear taillights.

Getting into the cab, steps are built into the 180-gallon fuel tank at a more gentle rake to make access easier.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-180141 size-full" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/23181439/283190_web1_Puma-Tractor_712329.jpg" alt="Three new Puma models debut for the 2027 model year, with horseshoer ratings of 155, 165 and 185.
New cats out of bag

Speaking of the Puma line, the brand just announced the debut of three new models — 155-, 165- and 185-horsepower versions made their debut.

Puma buyers can choose between the CVXDrive continuously variable transmission or the ActiveDrive 8 dual-clutch transmission.

Since the Optums made their debut at Agritechnica, Cadle says the brand has had a lot of positive feedback from potential customers waiting for their release on this side of the ocean.

“We got a lot of response in North America organically from that. We really didn’t put anything out in North America about it. Customers were contacting their dealers. They saw it on social media. So we’ve been getting a lot of positive response from customers out there already.”

Optums will be available for ordering in June. Buyers can expect deliveries to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.

A few years ago, Agco’s Fendt brand discontinued production of its 800 Series tractors after the introduction of the Gen 7, 700 Series models. That left a bit of a horsepower gap near the upper end of the line.

At the Commodity Classic farm show in Texas in February, the brand backfilled that gap with the North American reintroduction of the new and improved Gen5 800 Vario Series.

“The big differences on this 800 Series compared to the previous one is it’s a little higher horsepower, so it will go up to 320 … and it has all the characteristics of the bigger machines on a smaller chassis,” says Brandon Montgomery, Fendt’s brand manager.

WHY IT MATTERS: This release shores up the range of horsepower options available to Fendt partisans in Canadian farming.

There are now three 800 Series models: an 826, 829 and 832. They span the 260 to 320 horsepower range.

“Then you’re getting an additional roughly 20 horsepower on top of that for DynamicPower,” adds Montgomery.

“As soon as you get into p.t.o. loads, hydraulic loads, transport loads, you get the extra DynamicPower to go with that.”

The 800s now come with a new 8.0-litre Agco Power CORE engine under the hood. The Core family of engines began debuting some time ago, and this all-new 8.0-litre engine makes its debut in these tractors.

Core engines are capable of burning alternative fuels such as hydrogenated vegetable oil with minimal modifications. The basic principle of the Core concept is the same basic, or core, engine block can be made to work with multiple fuels.

“It will eventually run other (fuel) technologies as well,” says Montgomery.

“With very few changes and adjustments, it can be modified for that. That’s why we called it Core. The core is always the same.”

All-new, redesigned 800 Series Fendt tractors were relaunched for the North American market at a farm show in Texas in February. Photos: Agco/Fendt

This engine stays with the Fendt iD low-engine-speed, high-torque concept the brand offers in other bigger tractor lines. Peak torque is in the 1,250 to 1,300 r.p.m. range with maximum r.p.m. at 1,700.

The new 800 Series pack a lot of horsepower and capacity into a comparatively compact package.

“It has all the characteristics of the bigger machines on a smaller chassis,” says Montgomery.

To deliver that power to the ground, the 800s get the VarioDrive system, which was originally introduced on the 1000 Series. A CVT transmission delivers power to both the front and rear axles as needed. The tractor will automatically increase front wheel speed to pull the tractor around a corner, avoiding the scrubbing that often occurs on MFWD drivelines.

“We call it VarioDrive, because it’s an evolution of the Fendt CVT,” he adds.

“The difference between CVT and VarioDrive is it’s all-encompassing of the four-wheel drive as well. As an operator, you never touch the four-wheel drive.”

RELATED: OutRun tillage automation system released

Hydraulic capacity is improved on the new 800s, too. Two pumps are available, a 43.5 g.p.m. (165 l/mn) and 58 g.p.m. (220. l/mn). Tractors can also be ordered with both pumps to get a combined flow rate of 101.5 g.p.m. (385 l/mn).

Another key feature of these tractors is their track widths are now compatible with 30-inch row cropping, a feature the original 800 Series didn’t offer due to its wider frame. That initially hamstrung their popularity with row-crop producers.

The new 800s now use the same cab as the larger tractors, offering upgraded operator comfort.

“New cab, new frame, new payloads,” says Montgomery.

“VarioDrive technology and the VarioGrip tire inflation system — all the latest in technology in terms of our guidance system is all unlocked on that series.”

Updated 500 series

The 800s weren’t the only new Fendts to debut at the Texas show. Agco also pulled the wraps off its Gen4 version of the 500 Vario Series.

Arguably the most unexpected update for the smaller 500s is the introduction of the VarioDrive system, which had only been available on its big brothers.

Gen4, 500 Series Fendt tractors also get a power bump along with the brand’s sophisticated VarioDrive four-wheel drive system.

“We’re cascading that feature down, even to the new 500 Series,” says Montgomery.

“That was the big change in the 500 series.”

However, it’s not the only change.

The Deutz four-cylinder diesels used in the previous generation give way to another of Agco’s all-new Core engines, this time a 5.0-litre and another brand new introduction. As seems to be the case with every recent new model update from every major brand, these tractors also get a horsepower boost.

“You have a range from 130 to 174 horsepower,” says Montgomery. “You have four models, 513, 514, 515 and 516, covering 130 to 160 and you have an extra 10 horsepower with DynamicPower added on top.”

The 500s get a slightly smaller cab than the 800s, but they, too, can be filled with all of the brand’s high-end technology.

CORRECTION, March 19: The topmost photo from the 800 series and the above photo from the 500 series somehow got swapped yesterday. That error has now been fixed.

Agco’s OutRun automated tillage system, compatible with 900 Series Fendt tractors, is now commercially available; it will be compatible with 1000 Series tractors this fall.

Two years ago, Agco, along with its PTx Trimble division, showed the farming world its autonomous grain cart system.

It allows a tractor and grain cart to respond to remote unload requests from a combine operator without an operator in the tractor seat.

Initially Agco made the somewhat surprising decision to introduce it first for John Deere 8R tractors, rather than one of its own.

Now the system is compatible with the Fendt 900 Series tractors as well.

When OutRun was first shown, Agco said it would eventually expand the system’s capabilities to include autonomous tillage. This year, that system becomes commercially available on the Fendt 900 tractors. This fall, it will also be available on the larger 1000 Series Fendts.

“We started with the 900 Series first,” says Brandon Montgomery, Fendt’s brand manager.

“It’s available in the grain cart version and tillage. Our next phase is the 1000 Series.

“On the 1000 Series, it’s unlocked from the factory for OutRun, so customers can order the 1000 Series with the OutRun system, but it’s physically installed. The completing parts will have to be physically installed at the dealership, and they will be available this fall, 2026.”

The system can handle implements with working widths up to about 55 feet. That is due to the vision limitations of the camera system the tractors use to “see” where they’re going.

However, there are no restrictions on which implements are used or from which manufacturer. The system works with any tillage implement from any brand.

Despite the dissolution of a key joint venture, the world’s largest-selling farm tractor company by volume says a new product lineup will be rolling out over 2026 and 2027.

On March 6, Texas-based Mahindra Ag North America (MAGNA) announced a transition away from Mitsubishi Mahindra Agriculture (MMA), its ag equipment joint venture with Japanese-based conglomerate Mitsubishi.

WHY IT MATTERS: Assurances about Mahindra’s future in the ag equipment business are helpful for Canadian farmers in the market for new iron – not to mention those who already run Mahindra-branded machines.

A MAGNA news release called the move “a well-planned and strategic decision” that “reaffirmed Mahindra’s commitment to delivering high-quality products tailored to the North American market.”

The company plans to introduce several new products over the coming months, including utility tractor models ranging from 26 to 70 horsepower. The new products are intended to replace current models produced through the joint venture.

However, dealers and customers will continue to have access to MMA products throughout the transition. Mahindra also says it will provide ongoing support for existing products — including parts, warranty and service — for years to come.

“Throughout the course of the joint venture, the two companies collaborated extensively in research, product development and engineering,” read the release.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-179951 size-full" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/12195831/277583_web1_1--2-.jpeg" alt="Mitsubishi had built certain Mahindra-branded tractors even before their joint venture, such as this Mahindra 1533 loader shown in 2015. Photo: Mahindra/PRNewsFoto

“Mahindra will continue to leverage the shared experience, data and knowledge to design, build and produce tractors that meet and exceed the expectations of its dealers and customers.”

MMA was set up in 2015, two-thirds held by Mitsubishi and one-third by Mahindra. The two companies said at the time they aimed to “jointly develop products to address global opportunities in the tractor and agri-machinery space (and) improve cost competitiveness though joint procurement and optimize the supply chain.”

According to a Reuters report March 2, the joint venture has incurred losses “despite multiple structural measures aimed at restoring profitability.”

Tianli, an international manufacturer of industrial tires, has introduced a new lifetime warranty for sales of its radial agriculture tires in Canada.

The company’s Chinese parent, Zhongce Rubber Group, announced in late January that an unlimited-time warranty will apply against any manufacturer or “raw material” defects on all Tianli-branded radial ag tires that enter service after Jan. 1, 2026.

WHY IT MATTERS: For most farm tires, the typical warranty against defect applies for a certain number of years and/or is pro-rated on factors such as tread wear and time in service.

According to Canadian wholesaler Dynamic Tire, the Tianli AG Lifetime Warranty offers:

Lifetime coverage against manufacturer defects.

Streamlined warranty processing through Dynamic Tire’s B2B customer portal.

Enhanced dealer support and confidence in the field.

A clear demonstration of long-term brand commitment.

Strengthening competitive positioning.

“The Tianli AG Lifetime Warranty reflects the trust we have in the product and our commitment to supporting our partners, not just at the point of sale, but for the life of the tire,” David Pulla, president of Dynamic Tire, said in a news release.

“Our business has always been built on long-term relationships, and this warranty is a reflection of that commitment to our partners.”

Tianli tires are distributed through Dynamic Tire’s network of dealerships throughout Canada.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-179942 size-full" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/12151730/277418_web1_twp_harvest-king-2_tianli.jpg" alt="Tianli’s Harvest King tire. Photo: Dynamic Tire

Oleh Buriak, Dynamic Tire’s national product specialist for ag tires, says lifetime warranties aren’t common in the ag tire industry, where many warranties are based on the time of manufacturing.

“Every manufacturer limits the length of the warranty. Tianli decided to break those rules and give lifetime to show end users … that their tires are extremely reliable. There is no sense to shorten that warranty down to five or six or 10 years.”

Tianli is extending the warranty to include radial tires manufactured over the past few years, says Buriak.

“So even a tire which was manufactured in 2023, (if it) enters service today, it’s covered with the same warranty.

“It means the manufacturer is confident in their tires, not only for this year’s production but the year before and the year before.”

Tianli tires are available at dealerships throughout Canada. However, they are subject to varying availability, particularly in Western Canada, due to the long distance from Dynamic Tire’s warehouse in Toronto. Buriak doesn’t think this will present a major challenge for customers.

“From my experience, when the end user, the farmer, is going to change their full set of big tires for a 500-horsepower articulated tractor and they need eight of these tires, they know about it in advance.”

Tianli bills itself as one of the world’s biggest application-specific tire brands in the world. Aside from agriculture, its portfolio includes tires for the forestry, construction and mining, earth moving, port and sand service industries.

One of the key market areas Agco’s Massey Ferguson brand has targeted is the livestock sector and commercial hay growers.

The brand’s current offering now includes a digital pairing of its 8S and 9S tractors to the LB Series large square Hesston by Massey Ferguson balers.

It improves tractor and implement co-ordination and simplifies processes for the operator.

WHY IT MATTERS: A system that allows helpful dialogue between a towed machine and a towing tractor may improve not just the efficiency of both units but the quality of the end commodity.

TIM (Tractor and Implement Management) allows a Hesston by Massey Ferguson large square baler to control the speed of an 8S or 9S tractor to maximize baler output and at the same time improve bale quality.

At the Commodity Classic farm show in Texas, the brand announced new 8S and 9S tractors will soon be available for order directly from the factory with TIM.

“The other exciting thing we’ve been launching at this show is Tractor and Implement Management for our 8S and 9S tractors,” says Derek Reusser, senior marketing manager for high horsepower tractors with Massey Ferguson.

“It’s new for 2026. It’s really all about facing challenges our farmers are facing with skilled operators.

“It really allows the implement to dictate what the tractor does. When we think about large square baling specifically, based on your flake count target, it will change the operating speed of the tractor.”

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-179911 size-full" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/11203042/277142_web1_Massey-Ferguson-copy-2.jpeg" alt="The 8S and 9S tractors will now be available with TIM installed directly from the factory, starting this year. Photo: John Greig

A sensor on the knotter trip wheel sends information to the tractor to control its speed, allowing it to keep feeding material into the baler at an even rate, which helps produce consistent bales.

“TIM Drive is what it’s called,” says Reusser.

“The knotter trip wheel is essentially counting your flakes. That flake count is communicated back to the tractor. We’re giving that system the capability to change the speed of the tractor based upon what it’s measuring.

“The flake size is really what farmers are looking at. For an eight-foot bale, you want about a 2.4-, 2.5-inch flake size to deliver that consistent length. Usually farmers are looking for about 40 flakes on an eight-foot bale.”

Added Jessica Williamson, marketing manager for hay and forage with Massey Ferguson: “All of our LB Series large round balers already come pre-equipped with TIM … so it’s not an add-on for our customers. All of them are ready to be hooked to a tractor with TIM, regardless of baler size from our 3 x 3 up to our 4 x 4. It comes already equipped with TIM.”

‘Pretty significant’

Williamson says Agco did field trials using TIM to see what impact it had on bale production. The results demonstrated a significant improvement, she claims.

“We wanted to see the overall improvement in bale consistency when implementing TIM versus not. We looked at having a mid- or lower-level operator and how it would improve overall bale consistency. Does this open up the tractor seat to someone with a lower level of skill?

“A mid-level operator got a 225 per cent overall improvement from bale to bale. He got about a two-inch variability in overall bale length.

“We’re improving flake count and overall bale length. Probably the most significant improvement we got was overall bale weight. In dry straw, we saw an 80 pound overall bale-to-bale improvement by implementing TIM. Eighty lb. in very dry straw is pretty significant.”

The system also has a use on Hesston by Massey Ferguson RB Series round balers. It stops the tractor when the chamber is full and allows the bale to tie and eject. All the operator has to do is start the tractor again.

For producers who already have an 8S or 9S tractor, the TIM software can be downloaded and installed on existing models. LB Series large balers have been equipped with TIM from the factory for the last two model years.

It’s been a pretty standard sight to see a prototype or concept machine at New Holland’s display every second year at the Agritechnica machinery show in Germany.

The last event was no exception. This time the brand created a one-off machine intended to highlight its Italian heritage.

“The driving force behind it was we were coming up to Agritechnica and we wanted to do a concept to celebrate our design and heritage and where we’re going as a company,” says Andrew Dunne, brand identity and product launches manager.

WHY IT MATTERS: “Concept” designs such as these can be a bellwether of where farm machinery is headed in both form and function.

Built on a standard production T5 chassis, the T5.120 Il Trattore concept tractor takes its inspiration from the first production Fiat tractor to be built in Italy. In 1991, Fiat took over the Ford New Holland brand and eventually adopted the New Holland name for all its models.

<img decoding="async" width="1200" height="872" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/05170001/273939_web1_Front.jpg" alt="The concept tractor will be on display this year at the Customer Centre at NH’s assembly plant in Jesi, Italy. Photo: New Holland

Here in North America, Fiat-built tractors have appeared over the years wearing Allis-Chalmers and Hesston name badges, as well as White Farm Equipment and its subsidiary brands.

“We looked back at the original 702 Fiat tractor and we took that as a benchmark,” says Dunne.

“We took the utility tractor today that is built in Jesi (New Holland’s assembly plant in Italy) as well and decided to style it, to give it a modern twist harkening back to the original heritage.

“The colour scheme was inspired by the original tractor, but we went for a modern twist with a darker metallic, slightly premium colour. We used the original red-orange colour on the wheels.”

Callback to a classic

A restored 1918 702 Fiat tractor was displayed alongside the Il Trattore concept model at Agritechnica.

Originally developed to address the labour shortages in Europe created by the First World War, the original Fiat 702 introduced a design that became a staple in agricultural tractor production.

<img decoding="async" width="1200" height="900" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/05165958/273939_web1_Fiat-tractor2-Agritechnica2025-gberg-copy.jpeg" alt="The original Fiat 702 began commercial production in Italy in 1918 and was the inspiration for the concept tractor. Both tractors were displayed at Agritechnica. Photo: Greg Berg

It debuted a four-cylinder engine and load-bearing powertrain as a chassis, an idea that was also adopted in the original Fordson tractor design, which made its commercial introduction in 1917.

The 702’s success helped establish Fiat’s reputation in agricultural equipment, one of a few Italian companies that were early innovators with their designs. The first modern production front-wheel assist tractor was introduced in Italy by the SAME-brand tractor manufacturer.

The Il Trattore project came together quickly, says Dunne.

<img decoding="async" width="1200" height="802" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/05170003/273939_web1_Overall-1.jpg" alt="The T5.120 Il Trattore concept tractor was created by New Holland’s design team as a one-off model to show at Agritechnica, highlighting the brand’s Fiat history. Photo: New Holland

“It was a very, very fast project. I would say we started six months before the show. It was a very small group of people. The original idea came from our CEO, Gerrit Marx.”

Marx was inspired by a 702 that was on display at the company’s Turin headquarters. An in-house design team came up with the modern look for the concept tractor.

Special styling

Aside from its unique body style, the Il Trattore features a number of special touches.

<img decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/05165957/273939_web1_Il-Trattore-Concept-Tractor-006_706889-copy.jpeg" alt="One of the unique touches built into the tractor is a leather-wrapped tool box. Photo: New Holland

“We took the toolbox that was standard on the (T5) tractor and covered it in leather and colour-coded it as well so it matched the tractor,” says Dunne.

That’s reminiscent of an idea that Mercedes Benz introduced, including matching leather luggage with its iconic 300SL Gull Wing car model in the 1950s.

“At New Holland, we do care about how things look and the style of them,” Dunne says.

The cab interior features several leather-wrapped components. Photo: New Holland

“We like to do these concepts. We like to present ourselves as a stylish modern brand.”

The tractor garnered a lot of attention at the German show, attracting almost as much media attention as the new production models on display.

It’s now back in Italy at the Jesi plant, on display for visitors to the factory. From there, the company isn’t certain what the future holds in store for it.

“Maybe we’ll bring the tractor to EIMA because it’s a home show in Italy,” says Dunne.

“After that, we don’t know. There’s some talk of it going to a museum in Turin, which is a Fiat historical museum. It’s not out of the question that maybe we’ll auction it off.”

It’s been a few years since New Holland announced updates to its Workmaster compact tractor lineup.

For those who were curious if anything new was coming down the pipe, the wait is over.

Hailing it as the “next generation” in the compact tractor space, the blue brand announced last month that it had added two new models to the Workmaster line: the 35C and 40C.

The new additions are the largest of four models in the Workmaster compact tractor lineup.

Using modelling software and proprietary operator data, the company claims that comfort, affordability and capability are at the core of the new compact tractors.

“Comfort was a key focus when we designed the operator’s platform,” said Mike Sevick, compact tractor business manager for New Holland North America.

The two new Workmasters are four-wheel drive and are powered by a turbo-charged, three-cylinder, 1.9-litre engine. The model names indicate each tractor’s horsepower. They’re also turbo-charged.

Chad Gillis, salesperson with Mazergroup in Portage la Prairie, Man., said the turbos provide that extra boost of power operators may need for the loader or for power take-off work such as a tiller or mower.

New Holland’s latest Workmaster compact tractor is equipped with the 270BC backhoe.

The new Workmasters are available with a hydrostatic transmission or a 12×12 manual transmission, Gillis said.

Rear implements can be connected on the new Workmaster tractors via a Category 1 three-point hitch.

For improved loader response at the controls, the dual pump hydraulic system provides 8.2 g.p.m. dedicated hydraulic flow so implement systems aren’t bogged down.

For customers needing hydraulics at the rear of the tractor, up to three optional remotes can be installed along with colour-coded levers for the operator.

Both new Workmaster models come with a 60-inch front bucket, Gillis added.

An all-new backhoe setup comes with a standard 16-inch bucket available for both the 35C and 40C tractors.

When it comes to appearance, the new Workmasters have a sculpted hood and new decals and are painted in New Holland’s new Dynamic Blue paint scheme.

“They have the new shade of blue as well as silver wheels instead of white wheels,” said Gillis.

On-board fuel supply is managed by a 28-litre fuel tank with an easier access fill neck atop the left rear fender.

New compact Farmalls from Case IH

The other half of the CNH brand, Case IH, took the opportunity of the National Farm Machinery Show this month to debut two new compact Farmall tractors.

The new 35A and 40A tractors complement the brand’s wide range of Small Utility A Series tractors that climbs all the way up to a 75A (74hp) model.

The 35A and 40A also get their power from a three-cylinder, 1.9-litre engine, and the same option of a hydrostatic or 12×12 gear manual transmission

The new A models also come with a three-point hitch and have a slightly higher hydraulic flow rate of 8.4 GPM than New Holland’s Workmaster tractors.

The 35A and 40A come ready for entry-level telematics, allowing for Case IH’s FieldOps integration should customers choose.
