Two years ago, Agco, along with its PTx Trimble division, showed the farming world its autonomous grain cart system.

It allows a tractor and grain cart to respond to remote unload requests from a combine operator without an operator in the tractor seat.

Initially Agco made the somewhat surprising decision to introduce it first for John Deere 8R tractors, rather than one of its own.

Now the system is compatible with the Fendt 900 Series tractors as well.

When OutRun was first shown, Agco said it would eventually expand the system’s capabilities to include autonomous tillage. This year, that system becomes commercially available on the Fendt 900 tractors. This fall, it will also be available on the larger 1000 Series Fendts.

“We started with the 900 Series first,” says Brandon Montgomery, Fendt’s brand manager.

“It’s available in the grain cart version and tillage. Our next phase is the 1000 Series.

“On the 1000 Series, it’s unlocked from the factory for OutRun, so customers can order the 1000 Series with the OutRun system, but it’s physically installed. The completing parts will have to be physically installed at the dealership, and they will be available this fall, 2026.”

The system can handle implements with working widths up to about 55 feet. That is due to the vision limitations of the camera system the tractors use to “see” where they’re going.

However, there are no restrictions on which implements are used or from which manufacturer. The system works with any tillage implement from any brand.

A trust established for Prairie farmers following the demise of the Canadian Wheat Board has achieved full allocation.

The Farmers Equity Trust was created in 2015 as a condition of the sale of the CWB to G3 Canada Ltd.

Ten years later, the trust units have been fully allocated.

“It is momentous,” said trust chair Kevin Augusta. “It is definitely a signpost along the way for the trust.”

The trust owns 499,000 Class B shares in G3, which were originally valued at $210.2 million.

That represented a 49.9 per cent ownership stake in the company at the time the trust was created on July 31, 2015.

These days, the ownership stake is closer to 20 per cent.

“Over time, G3 has spent a whack of money building new inland terminals and a new export terminal in Vancouver,” said Augusta.

The majority shareholders, which are Bunge Global SA and SALIC Canada Ltd., contributed all the cash for that expansion in return for additional equity in the firm.

The trust has no money to invest, so its percentage ownership in G3 has been diluted over time.

“We have a lower percentage of a bigger entity than we did on day one,” he said.

WHY IT MATTERS: Many Prairie farmers have an ownership stake in G3 Canada.

Units in the trust are issued to eligible farmers who have delivered grain to G3 and to the former wheat board. There are about 28,000 unit holders in Western Canada.

Farmers who delivered grain to the board between Aug. 1, 2013, and July 31, 2015, are eligible for units in addition to those who delivered grain to G3 after its inception on Aug. 1, 2015.

When the trust was formed, G3 estimated it would take seven to 10 years to allocate all the units.

“That’s about what it took,” said Augusta.

Units are reserved for any farmer who delivered grain and are issued to those who complete an eligibility certificate.

Are you…?

Statements are issued annually to those with reserved units, asking them to complete a certificate comprising two questions: are you a resident of Western Canada and are you a taxpayer?

However, many farmers have not completed the certificate. About half of the total allocated units are still reserved and have not yet been issued.

Augusta wishes more farmers would complete the eligibility certificate.

“Sign it and send it back. It’s not onerous,” he said.

There are no tax implications at the time the units are issued and no costs to the farmer. However, there will be a capital gain incurred once they are redeemed.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1000" height="700" src="https://static.grainews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/11144615/276941_web1_G3-Morinville.jpg" alt="Units in G3 Canada’s Farmer’s Equity Trust are issued to eligible farmers who have delivered grain to G3 and to the former Canadian Wheat Board. Photo: G3 Canada

There are four ways to redeem the trust units:

Farmers can request redemption upon reaching age 75 for units held for at least three years.

The estate can request redemption upon the death of a unit holder. “We are receiving many, many such redemption request these days,” said Augusta.

If the other G3 shareholders purchase the trust shares at fair market value, an option that kicked in at the end of seven years of the company’s existence. “So far, they haven’t shown any indications that they’re desirous of doing that,” he said.

If the majority shareholders in G3 decide to sell their interest in the firm. “Our shares would get dragged along in any transaction on the same terms and conditions,” said Augusta.

Redemptions

The trust board considers redemptions once a year. Trust units are currently valued at $3.40 per unit. That number changes quarterly based on a mathematical formula.

“Sometimes we hear grumblings that farmers can’t necessarily redeem their units when they want, and that’s true,” said Augusta.

“It was never designed to be a liquid investment.”

Once a unit is redeemed, it is cancelled. They do not get reissued.

Annual redemptions these days total much more than $500,000 per year.

That could eventually prove problematic because the government originally provided $4.6 million to manage the trust, and that fund has dwindled over time.

Augusta declined to divulge how much remains in the fund. At some point, the trust will not have the means to redeem any more units, in which case they will have to issue promissory notes.

There is always the possibility that the fund could receive an injection of cash if the other G3 shareholders make an offer to purchase the trust shares or if G3 is sold to another buyer.

If that happens, the net proceeds will be distributed to all the issued units. The reserved units that belong to farmers who have not bothered to fill out their eligibility certificates will not participate in the distribution of proceeds.

“That farmer will get nothing,” said Augusta.

Canadian Pacific Kansas City hit a new record for February movement of Canadian grain and grain products, moving 2.232 million tonnes in February 2026, the company reported on March 3. That beat the previous tonnage record for the month set in February 2021.

The company reported 23,088 carloads during the month, which was also a new February record. The company moved 2.395 million tonnes of grain in January 2026 with 24,688 carloads — both monthly records for January.

“This is the second straight monthly Canadian grain record and it continues a strong start to 2026 as our railroaders work safely and efficiently with our supply chain collaborators to move a record grain crop across Western Canada,” said Elizabeth Hucker, CPKC vice-president of sales and marketing bulk, in the news release.

CPKC transported more than 17.1 MMT of Canadian grain and grain products through the first 30 weeks of the 2025/26 marketing year, hitting the largest totals since the record setting 2020/21 crop year.

The volume of Canadian grain and grain products moving on CPKC tracks have exceeded the average supply chain capacity targets outlined in the company’s annual grain service plan in multiple weeks in 2025/26.

CPKC said it was “critical that all supply chain participants, including customer loading facilities and terminal operators loading grain into vessels at ports, operate at full capacity to sustain this strong momentum.”

Washington | Reuters — Grain trader Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM) has agreed to pay a $40 million (C$54.2 million) civil penalty to settle charges from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it inflated the performance of a key business segment, the regulator said on Tuesday.

ADM reached the settlement without admitting or denying any wrongdoing, and said the Justice Department, which had been conducting its own probe, has closed its investigation without bringing criminal charges.

The agreement draws a line under a years-long scandal that forced the company, one of the world’s largest agricultural traders and processors, to twice revise its financial reports, and sparked heavy share losses and shareholder lawsuits.

WHY IT MATTERS: ADM is one of the world’s largest agricultural traders and processors.

The SEC on Tuesday separately sued ADM’s former Chief Financial Officer Vikram Luthar for his role in the allegedly fraudulent adjustments and filed settled charges against two other top executives.

The SEC settlement includes charges brought against former Nutrition business unit President Vince Macciocchi and Ray Young, who was ADM’s CFO until 2022. Macciocchi has agreed to pay more than $529,000 in fines and other fees, while Young will pay more than $650,000.

The SEC complaint against Luthar, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, accuses him of breaking federal securities laws by helping ADM mislead investors and by failing to properly report and account for the company’s activities.

Regulators allege he played a role in fraudulent conduct, helped ADM violate rules and benefitted from the fraud. The SEC is seeking to bar Luthar from serving as an officer or director of a public company, and force him to pay a penalty and other fees.

Luthar’s attorney Junaid Zubairi called the allegations “meritless” and said ADM’s own investigation found that Luthar had not acted improperly.

A lawyer for ADM declined to comment further. A lawyer for Macciocchi also declined to comment and a lawyer for Young did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the closing of the criminal case.

In a statement on the company’s website, CEO Juan Luciano said the company is pleased to put the matter behind them and has taken “extensive actions” to enhance internal controls.

ADM shares were near unchanged in after-hours trading on Tuesday.

Probe centred on nutrition unit

Federal prosecutors opened a probe in early 2024 into accounting issues at ADM tied to the performance of its highly touted “Nutrition” unit, Reuters previously reported. The government investigations as well as an internal inquiry led to the exit of Luthar.

The ADM investigation involved internal company transactions that inaccurately reported financial results for the “Nutrition” unit, which was launched in 2018 to accelerate development of high-value specialty ingredients for the food, beverage and animal feed industries.

ADM cut a combined $228 million from Nutrition’s operating profit between 2018 and 2023 as a result of the revisions, company filings show.

News of the accounting irregularities broke in early 2024, sending ADM shares plummeting and heaping pressure on top executives, including Luciano, as top executive compensation had been tied to growth in the Nutrition unit.

The investigation into “intersegment” transactions between the company’s business segments focused on whether ADM deliberately boosted Nutrition’s performance by providing it with below-cost goods from other company units.

The SEC considered ADM’s cooperation in accepting the settlement offer, the regulator said in a statement.

Specifically, the company conducted an internal investigation, voluntarily reported its findings to agency staff, and provided the staff with additional analyses from an outside accounting expert.

ADM’s remedial measures included implementing new internal accounting controls around intersegment transactions, amending its policies and procedures, and testing the effectiveness of its new controls, among other things, the SEC said.

— Additional reporting by Jonathan Stempel and Jasper Ward in Washington and P.J. Huffstutter in Chicago

Grain handling equipment maker AGI this fall added two new models to its grain conveyor lineup: the gas-over-hydraulic FX4 SP, and the top-drive electric FX4 18S.

“The FX4 SP and FX4 18S are built for grain operations that require reliable, high-throughput conveyors that range from 8,000 to 10,500 (bushels per hour),” AGI’s senior vice-president for North American farm and global portables, Paul Brisebois, said in a press release.

The self-propelled mover kit available for the FX4 SP with all-terrain tires makes moving the conveyor around for those less-than-perfectly-located grain bins a little easier. The conveyor comes with a 37-horsepower Vanguard gas engine that moves grain through a 10-inch tube using a 15-inch belt.

Those features give this model an 8,000-bushel per hour capacity.

An under-hopper skid plate improves belt protection and allows for easier cleanup at the end of a job. It also offers a low-profile collapsible hopper and handler to allow for more clearance under trucks and hoppers.

The FX4 SP is available in 39-, 44- and 49-foot lengths. It’s available under the AGI Batco, AGI GrainMaxx, AGI Hutchinson and AGI Westfield brand names.

The FX4 18S electric top drive conveyor uses a larger 12.75-inch tube and an 18-inch belt, giving it a 10,500-bushel per hour capacity. It’s available in 39- and 44-foot lengths.

A new steel hopper option is available as well as what the company calls a “no-nonsense” discharge hood to better direct grain flow straight down. For durability and better performance, the belt runs on a new, larger drive roller.

“The FX4 18S is all about capacity and control,” AGI director of global product management Kent Woods said. “We’ve upgraded the belt, rollers and hopper to give farmers a conveyor that performs under pressure and simplifies setup.”

This model will also appear on dealers’ lots under the same four brand names as the FX4 SP.

“This series launch reflects AGI’s commitment to building smarter, more efficient grain handling solutions for farm operations of all sizes,” Brisebois said.

Glacier FarmMedia — Bunge has sold five western Canadian elevators as required under the federal approval for its merger with Viterra.

All five have been sold to local companies, according to a press release.

Direct Grain Ltd. will operate Dixon, Sask., Linear Grain Inc. bought Fannystelle, Man., and BP & Sons Grain and Storage Inc. purchased elevators in Manitoba at Beausejour, Tucker and Coulter.

A sixth sale, of the facility in Valparaiso, Sask., is still waiting for approval from the federal transport minister. Bunge said it expects that sale to close shortly.

The company said the six facilities had been held separate from the rest of its business and run by an independent Hold Separate Manager since July 2. A government-approved third party monitored the sales process.

Bunge also sold its elevator in Eyebrow, Sask., to F. W. Cobs, but that wasn’t part of its commitment under the merger approval.

U.S. grain trader and processor Bunge on Wednesday lowered its 2025 earnings forecast following its merger with Viterra, and said it is overhauling segment and volume reporting to align with its integrated operations.

Shares of the company, however, rose 11.6 per cent in early trading. UBS analyst Manav Gupta said investors had feared a worse outlook.

“Dilution is coming in much better than expected. This lifts the overhang on the stock and we expect a big relief rally in this name,” Gupta said in a note.

Why it matters: The merger of Viterra and Bunge, which created a company of similar scale to Archer-Daniels-Midland and Cargill, raised concerns among Canadian farm groups over the effects of market consolidation.

Bunge completed its merger with Glencore-backed Viterra in July, two years after announcing the $34 billion (C$47.7 billion) mega-deal.

“We believe based on updated provided today, that Viterra might not cause any dilution in 2026, setting up for a potentially big beat and raise for 2026,” Gupta added.

The merger with the Netherlands-based Viterra creates a global crop trading and processing giant that is poised to rival agribusiness giants Archer-Daniels-Midland and Cargill.

Meanwhile, slumping grain prices, weak crop-processing margins and geopolitical tensions have eroded profitability in the sector.

Bunge does not plan to provide specific outlook for 2026 until the first half of the year as it is navigating biofuel policy uncertainties and trade issues, company executives told investors on a conference call.

From the third quarter, its results will include separate segments for soybean, softseed, other oilseeds, as well as another division for grain merchandising and milling.

Bunge projects softseeds to become more “meaningful” and the combined company to see a big increase in handling and processing of corn, wheat and barley.

The company now expects 2025 adjusted earnings per share between $7.30 and $7.60 (C$10.25 to $10.67), compared with $7.75 per share forecast earlier. Analysts estimate the company’s full-year adjusted profit per share at $7.47, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Bunge is scheduled to release its third-quarter results on November 5.

The Canadian Grain Commission has asked farmers to consider delivering harvest samples directly to CGC offices, services centres or approved drop offs as Canada Post strike delays mail.

UPDATED – Farmers participating in the Canadian Grain Commission’s Harvest Sample Program may need to find other ways to submit their grain if Canada’s current postal strike drags on.

In a note pinned to the top of the program’s official website, the CGC noted that the strike was causing mail delays with the program.

Farmers were urged to, if possible, deliver their samples directly to the CGC, either at their head office in downtown Winnipeg, another CGC office or service centre, or another approved drop off site.

Service centres are located in British Columbia (Prince Rupert), Alberta (Calgary); Saskatchewan (Saskatoon and Weyburn), Manitoba (Churchill), Ontario (Thunder Bay and Hamilton) and Québec (Baie-Comeau and Québec City). Western and eastern regional offices can be found in Vancouver and Montréal, respectively. A full list, phone numbers and addresses can be found on the CGC’s webpage through the Government of Canada website.

“Please contact the office or service centre you’re visiting to confirm they have a sample drop off box available,” the website advises.

Besides CGC offices, drop off sites have been arranged at the following locations:

BroadGrain Commodities Inc. – Dafoe, Sask.

Bunge – Lethbridge County, Alta.

All Paterson Grain elevators in Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba

Sakai Spice – Lethbridge, Alta.

Farmers may also choose to keep their sample until the strike ends, the CGC said.

On Oct. 10, Canada Post said that mail service would resume after the Thanksgiving long weekend, as they moved to rotating, rather than nationwide, strikes.

The last day to mail samples is Nov. 30, 2025. Dec. 31, 2025 is the last day for any samples to be included in this year’s Harvest Sample Program.

Testing for quality

The cross-country Harvest Sample Program is a voluntary initiative for testing a host of quality factors across a range of crops.

For each sample, inspectors provide unofficial grade and quality results at no charge, including:

Falling number for wheat and rye,

Vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol or DON) levels for wheat, corn, barley and oats,

Dockage assessment on canola and mustard seed,

Protein content on barley, beans, chickpeas, lentils, oats, peas and wheat,

Oil, protein and chlorophyll content for canola,

Oil and protein content and iodine value for flaxseed, and

Oil and protein for mustard seed and soybeans.

A CGC inspection supervisor said producer participants appear to be taking the inconvenience in stride.

“There hasn’t been a lot of complaints or anything. I haven’t heard one complaint,” said Judy Elias with the Weyburn, Sask., service centre.

“We’re all used to strikes, so there’s just new ways to do old business.”

Glacier FarmMedia — The deliveries of major grains across Canada in August declined year-over-year, the latest data from Statistics Canada said.

StatCan published its major grain deliveries report for August 2025 on Sept. 25. In total, 3.588 million tonnes were delivered compared to 4.329 million in August 2024. The agency noted that tariffs placed on Canadian goods headed to the United States may have an impact on deliveries.

All wheat deliveries in August totaled 2.259 million tonnes compared to 2.321 million one year earlier. For durum, 279,584 tonnes were delivered last month, up from 244,560 tonnes in August 2024.

Canola deliveries fell below one million tonnes for the first time since August 2023, dropping to their lowest monthly total since May 2022. StatCan reported 621,555 tonnes of the oilseed were delivered in August, compared to 1.32 million tonnes in August of last year.

August barley deliveries were 379,238 tonnes, slightly more than the 375,071 tonnes delivered in August 2024. For oats, 278,097 tonnes were delivered, up from 267,271 tonnes one year earlier. Rye deliveries were up from 29,375 tonnes in August 2024 to 38,098 last month. Flaxseed deliveries were down from 15,127 tonnes in August 2024 to 11,953 tonnes a year later.

Saskatchewan provided 36.6 per cent of all deliveries, followed by Manitoba with 22.2 per cent and Alberta at 20.4 per cent.

Bunge intends to acquire the grain elevator assets of North West Terminal Ltd. at Unity in western Saskatchewan.

The company announced the deal in a Sept. 22 news release outlining the purchase agreement.

It includes the grain elevator and storage assets but not the fermentation and distillation facility on the same site.

The facility has storage capacity of 63,000 tonnes, making it one of the largest in Western Canada, as well as full cleaning and drying capability. Both CN and CPKC provide rail service to the site.

NWT, however, has booked several years of financial losses and announced last September it would indefinitely halt operations at the Unity elevator, about 80 km southwest of North Battleford.

NWT said in a separate release Sept. 22 it expects the aggregate purchase price to be $27 million, “substantially all” of which would go to pay down debt.

“Given the current state of the grain industry and the recent financial results of the company’s grain division, the board believes it is in the best interests of the company and its stakeholders to sell the company’s grain assets, make a significant repayment of debt and continue to operate the fermentation and distillation business,” NWT chairman Brad Sperle said in the release.

The sale is subject to approval by NWT shareholders — who include local farmers and others — at a meeting to be held the week of Oct. 20, and would then close on or about Oct. 29.

“We firmly believe that our operational and logistical expertise, focus on superior service and targeted future investments in the facility will allow us to bring it to its full potential for the benefit of our customers,” Bunge Canada CEO Kyle Jeworski said in a separate release. — Includes files from Grainews staff
