New soybean varieties for 2020

While you’re bringing in your 2019 soybean crop, start planning for next year

[UPDATED: Nov. 15, 2019] For most Prairie farmers, the 2019 growing season was a year that put their seed genetics to the test. It’s hard to make a choice about next year’s varieties without knowing what’s coming up in the weather forecast, but this is a good time to start studying your options.

There are lots of new varieties for farmers in traditional soybean-growing areas, options with higher yields and stronger disease packages that we’ve seen in the past. Breeders have been paying a lot of attention to iron deficiency chlorosis and phytophthora root and stem rot, and a few of the newest varieties have been developed with white mould in mind. Knowing which of these problems you’ve had in the fast few years will help you plan the future.

Keep in mind, this list only includes varieties that are new to the market for 2020. There may be other recent releases that also suit your area and your growing conditions.

On with the list.

Acronyms to know that commonly show up on soybean variety lists:

  • CEC: cation exchange capacity
  • CHU: corn heat units
  • IDC: iron deficiency chlorosis
  • MG: maturity group
  • PRR: phytophthora root rot and stem rot
  • RM: relative maturity
  • SCN: soybean cyst nematode

Corteva brings 2,4 D tolerance

Corteva will be launching its new Enlist E3 soybeans in Eastern Canada this year. For now, the company’s varieties’ maturities are a little too short for the West, although Corteva did have a plot of Enlist soybeans growing at the Ag in Motion farm show near Saskatoon in July.

When Enlist E3 does come West, Loralee Orr, Corteva’s marketing communications leader, says it’s going to be “exciting for Western Canada.” These soybeans allow farmers to use Enlist Duo — a co-formulation for glyophosate and 2,4-D. “It’s low drift, low volatility,” Orr says, and “great control for Roundup Ready volunteers.”

What’s a WinPak?

CROPLAN’s list of new varieties includes what they call a “WinPak” variety. This is a combination of two different soybean varieties, sold together in the same bag. CROPLAN says adding this type of diversity to your seed will help to better manage variability within fields, and with weather, as some varieties may do better than others under different conditions.

Wondering about the name? CROPLAN is a subsidiary of WinField United, the U.S.-based company created through the merger of WinField and United Suppliers.
