Can Am puts six wheels under a Defender

Can Am’s newest Defender HD10 is — wait for it — a 6X6, and it’s much bigger and more powerful than its next largest Defender HD10 brother. Uprated power comes from an 82 horsepower, 976 cc V-twin, liquid-cooled Rotax engine, the biggest so far in that model line. And the new Defender gets a 3,000-pound (1,360-kilogram) tow rating.

There are two colour choices for this machine, Mossy Oak camo or white. Of course, I’m betting the camo paint job will far outsell the white.

By adding more capacity, capability and power, BRP says it’s paying attention to customers and giving UTV buyers exactly what they want.

“BRP is committed to the full-size utility-recreational segment because it is one the fastest growing in the market,” said Bernard Guy, senior vice-president, Global Product Strategy, BRP, in the press release.

Full size might be a good way to describe this UTV. It’s overall towing and payload ratings are starting to rival those in the small pickup truck category. The 6X6 has a total payload capacity of 1,700 pounds (771 kilograms). 1,000 pounds of that can be loaded into the six-foot box behind the passenger compartment. (Ford’s Ranger offers a 1,650-pound or 748-kilogram payload.)

The 6X6 is built on an uprated platform. The brand says it was given a complete “frame-up and front-end refresh” to provide improved ride and better durability. That included adding double-arched A-arms with 11 inches (27.9 millimetres) of travel on the front axle. Suspension travel is the same at the rear and includes a sway bar for stability. There are 13 inches of under-body clearance.

Selectable four- and six-wheel drive modes with an auto-locking front differential deal with maximizing traction. And the hill descent feature adds more stability in rough terrain. Like other Defender models, this one offers three driving modes: ECO, ECO off and Work, to maximize performance depending on the working conditions.

With an overall dry weight of just under a ton, Can Am has given the big Defender dual-piston disc brakes at the front and rear to bring it and any load or trailer to a quick stop.

When it comes to price, the 6X6 DPS starts with a base list of $21,399. There are more than a few accessories that can be added on to the base machine, which will add to that. Included in that accessories list are two cab enclosures. The high-end Deluxe RT Rigid cab will add another $5,999. But it will provide automotive-like all-weather comfort for the driver. That includes climate control and power windows. Grainews tested a smaller defender with one of those Deluxe cabs this past winter. We really liked the comfort it added in adverse weather conditions, although it was a bit noisy.

To pull trailers, the 6X6 can be spec’d out with a two-inch hitch receiver.
