Dow AgroSciences has signed on for a "multi-year" sponsorship agreement with the Canadian Football League and plans to involve rural Prairie communities in its cross-promotion.

"We share many of the same customers, a passion for serving them well, and some great ideas for working together to bring them even closer to our league and our game," CFL commissioner Mark Cohon said in a Dow Agro release Thursday.

"We're confident our partnership will be as fun for our fans as it will be productive for our businesses."

Dow AgroSciences said it plans to host "multiple events" in rural communities in Western Canada this summer as part of the agreement, revolving around CFL regular-season games and including elements such as player appearances and pictures with the Grey Cup.

"These two brands are natural partners and we look forward to rolling out the full scope of the partnership in the coming weeks," Dow AgroSciences Canada president Jim Wispinski said in the same release.

Calgary-based Dow Agro Canada has already launched a contest promoting one of its herbicide brands with a draw for a trip to the 99th Grey Cup in late November in Vancouver.

"We're thrilled to help bring the CFL to farmers in Western Canada," Wispinski said. "We know that many of our customers are passionate CFL fans."

Financial terms of the sponsorship deal were not disclosed.

Wow. I am not suprised at all!!! DowAgroSciences has started something it shold not have. That's all we need is these corporations spending money on things like this. Come on really, what's next NHL? Why not drop the price of their chemical and stop these silly marketing campaigns. Shame on you Dow, I will not use your products because of this.

So you're telling me that Dow AGRO-Sciences should be sinking their marketing and sponsorship money into provincial health care? I didn't realize we are surrounded by so many brilliant marketing minds! What are you smoking??

Dow will have paid LOTS of money to marketing executives who have determined a specific reason to focus some of their marketing dollars to the CFL. It's a strategic play for whatever their reason is. None of you have a hot sniff as to how or why a large corporate entity like Dow markets itself and what it does with its sponsoship money.

If it's healthcare money you want, go scream at the Pfizers and SheringPloughs of the world...Yeesh!!

Hey people - take a pill . First of all , it is the CFL and not the NFL . Second , learn to have some fun once in a while ---- DOW will come to communities with players and the cup and that is good for rural communities across the prairies . But most of all , as these visits occur , think about your kids. We need our children in Agriculture and I love to see kids get excited and have some fun at community events. Where would you rather see Dow's $$$$ go - into one more trade magazine ad/TV commercial or to sponsoring some events in your communities. Give it a chance and see if it works before you condemn.

It is hard to understand how or why producer money would be used to promote a sport that should be totally paid for by the fans. It is a sport not a job or the many needed areas of funding needed in health care. Really what are the priorities today, Dow seems to think it is the CFL, wrong, wrong, wrong.

I am not surprised that a chemical company cares more about sports than agriculture. I am not surprised that CFL got a sponsorship where as there are hurting animals and hurting farm families out there that will not see a cent of help. I have a news flash for all of you. Sports are for playing, not a real job.
